In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short. Food security is one of the largest problems facing our world today. If we not only donate technology to these countries, but also work with them to fit the technology into their culture and lifestyles, then they will feel like they are a part of the solution. There are programs today working towards this goal. The following are descriptions of three programs dedicated to teaching small-scale farmers to become more self-sufficient. Self-Help International was established in Waverly, Iowa and has been fighting world hunger and promoting self-reliance since 1959. It is an ecumenical organization devoted to empowering farmers in developing countries to increase their food production efficiency and improve their incomes. Self-Help Internationals mission statement is to alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves. Self-Help focuses on agricultural and technological development, nutrition, rural transportation, marketing training, and leadership development. Self-Help International has a variety of projects in third world countries. These projects have several objectives that they address including training small-scale farmers to improve their methods of farming and transportation. They are also assisting in dealing with post-harvest problems of storage, processing, and marketing.
